What an afternoon looks like

Pick one page. Print it. Your child colors first — everything is more fun in color. A grown-up cuts along the solid lines; little hands fold on the dashed ones and press the glue stick where the GLUE box says. Then you play with what you made: a mask goes on for the photo, a puppet goes on a finger, a bingo card goes on the table.

Cute, not scary. The bat flaps, the spider bounces, the monster is named Mo and is afraid of the dark. Nothing in this book is out to scare anyone.

What's inside

Start (pages 1-7) — the grown-up pages. How the book works and the little legend; “October at a glance” — six moments from the boo basket on October 1 to trick-or-treat night, each pointing to a page; how to do story time with the cards; the face-paint page for grown-ups; “A party in 30 minutes” with a checklist; and the kit list.

Chapter 1 · Make (pages 8-23) — 12 crafts. Twelve brand-new crafts — none of them in The Halloween Craft Album. Five movers on paper fasteners (brads): Dancing Bones, a smiling skeleton in six bones and five brads that dances on a string; Wink's Big Wings, a bat with a second, bigger pair of wings that lift and flap on two brads; Midnight's Swishy Tail, a cat with a loose tail on one brad (hat optional); Mo Waves Hello, a monster whose arms wave and feet kick on four brads; and Wiggly Fig, a ghost on a string with a ruffled skirt that swings on two brads. Then Wrap Up Tuck (paper strips glued across a big pumpkin, two eyes peeking out), Paper Bag Puppets (two kits for paper lunch bags: Mo and Fig), The Pumpkin Patch Scene (a scene card and nine little friends to glue anywhere), Handprint Keepsakes (a ghost, a two-hand spider, a bat and a pumpkin, each with a “Halloween 20__ · name · age” line — fill in the year, make a new one next October), Build a Friendly Monster (Mo, with a 20-piece parts bank), a Pumpkin Paper Chain, and a Web Lacing Card with 16 holes.

Chapter 2 · Wear (pages 24-41) — 12 half masks and 12 face-paint looks. Twelve paper half masks to color, one per page — cat, jack-o'-lantern, bat, owl, ghost, monster, frog, spider, crow, mouse, fox and candy corn — with the eye holes marked and tabs for a loop of elastic. Then twelve face-paint looks in three steps, drawn as diagrams on a plain face outline: Kitty Cat, Pumpkin on the Cheek, Spiderweb on the Cheek, Bat, Little Ghost, Candy Corn, Bat-Butterfly, Little Monster, Little Owl, Spooky Rainbow, Shooting Star and Wrapped-Up Stripes. Every look lives on the cheeks, forehead, nose tip or chin; eyes and lips stay clear, and every look points back to the grown-up page.

Chapter 3 · Tell (pages 42-66) — puppets, story cards and six stories. Fifteen finger puppets on three pages. Forty-eight picture story cards in three decks — 16 WHO, 16 WHERE, 16 WHAT HAPPENS: lay one of each, the grown-up reads the word, your child tells the story. A roll-a-story die to build and a mat to roll on. Six read-aloud stories, two pages each, with one line your child says out loud (“Flap, flap, flap!”) and a “talk about it” question at the end. And two Finish the Story pages: you read the beginning, your child tells or draws the rest, and you write it down word for word.

Chapter 4 · Play (pages 67-97) — party games and quiet games. Halloween bingo with 24 picture cards, 16 calling cards, 48 markers and a caller's tracker — plus a no-winning “cover it” way to play at three. Four I Spy scenes to find and count. Four scavenger hunts: at home, in the yard, on a neighborhood walk, and at the party. Two memory games of 12 pairs each. Roll-a-Pumpkin (roll the die, draw the part). Two mazes and two dot-to-dots from 1 to 15.

BONUS · the Share chapter — for the neighbors, the class and the door

Chapter 5 comes along as a bonus: twelve pages for the part of October that happens outside your house. A You've Been BOOed kit — the “We've been BOOed” door sign, the poem that explains the game (two days, two families) and eight tags for the treat. Twenty-four treat-bag tags for friends, neighbors and the class. A door sign, front and back: “Trick or Treat Here” and “All out of candy.” Four party placemats with mini-activities to keep hands busy while the snacks arrive. And the boo-basket card for October 1, with ten low-cost ideas for what goes in the basket.

One little legend, used on every page

SOLID line — a grown-up cuts here · DASHED line — fold here (little hands can!) · LIGHT DASHES — cut the cards or pieces apart (a grown-up job, too) · GLUE box — where the glue stick goes.

How it works

Print one page at a time. Never the whole book. Every page says what it's for; you print the one you're doing today. The party page tells you which six to print the night before.

Cardstock for what gets worn, held or rolled. The half masks, the finger puppets, the roll-a-story die, the five movers and the lacing card. Plain paper for everything else — crafts, stories, cards, bingo, placemats, tags and signs. No cardstock? Glue the page to a cereal box before cutting.

A grown-up does the cutting. Every solid line is a grown-up line. Little hands color, fold on the dashed lines, press the glue stick, wear the mask, wiggle the puppet, cover the bingo square.

Print at 100%, “actual size.” Not “fit to page” — so the masks and puppets come out the right size for little faces and fingers. Color or black-and-white both work; the low-ink edition has lighter fills and thinner lines on the same 110 pages.

Safe and simple

Face paint: only paint made for skin and labeled for children. Test a dab on the inside of the forearm the day before. Every look in this book stays on the cheeks, forehead, nose tip or chin — nothing on the eyelids, lashes or lips; no glitter, no neon. Off before bed with warm water and mild soap. The grown-up page (page 5) has the whole list.

Half masks are for the party and the photo. Nothing over the nose or mouth, nothing tied around the neck, and on the sidewalk they go up like a visor so nothing blocks the view.

Scissors stay in the grown-up's hand. Small parts — the story cards, the bingo markers, the tags, the elastic — stay away from little siblings under three.

Who it's for

Ages 3-5, and a grown-up with scissors. At three, one word is already a story and bingo is “cover it” with no winning. At four, three story cards and a real row of three. At four and five, “four corners” or the full bingo card, the hunt in order against the kitchen timer, and — at five — telling the story backwards. The pages say which is which.

At home or in one classroom. One family, or one class of up to 24 — the bingo has 24 cards for a reason, the scavenger hunts have a “one sheet per table” line, and the license covers a single family or a single classroom.

It is not a worksheet pack, and it is not a costume. It's the month of October, one printable page at a time.

Questions parents ask

Is this a PDF? What exactly do I get? Yes. It's a digital download — the link arrives by email right after checkout, and nothing ships. Inside the folder are four PDFs of the same 110 pages, plus a short START-HERE note: pick the one file for your paper size and your printer, and ignore the other three.

Letter or A4 — will it fit my paper? Both are in the download. US Letter (8.5 × 11) for the US and Canada, A4 for the UK, Europe and Australia. The page numbers are the same in every file, so “the bingo is on page 67” is true wherever you print.

What is the low-ink edition? The same 110 pages, in the same order, with lighter fills and thinner lines — gentler on your printer, and the color is your child's job anyway. There's a low-ink file for Letter and one for A4. Use the full-color files for the masks and the story cards if you want them to pop; use low-ink for the rest.

Can I print it more than once? As many times as you like. Print the Pumpkin Paper Chain twice for a longer chain, print the bingo card for every guest, print a new handprint page next October — the year line is blank on purpose. One family or one classroom, no subscription: pay once, reprint for every child you have.

What if something isn't right? Digital files can't be returned, so all sales are final — but we'd rather fix a problem than keep your money. If a download won't open, a page is missing or corrupted, or a file doesn't match what's described here, email hello@printandplaypreschool.com within 30 days and we'll fix it, send replacement files, or refund you where that's the right answer.
